Fred
Poore
Artist, Fred Poore, specializing in drawing, painting, and photography.

Fred attended the Art Center School of Design as a photo major, and then worked as a freelance advertising photo illustrator for
over thirty years.  After a couple of years with time off to "play," he decided to try his hand
at art.  He started taking classes at El Camino and was immediately in love and in awe of drawing and painting.

Fred says that his "paintings are about
showing people that there is more to what they look at than what they see looking through an 80mm lens attached to a camera."  Fred wants others to "smell the atmosphere, feel the warmth, taste the cold and touch the texture."

Fred is on a continuous search of colors and their use, painting techniques, composition, light, contrast, moods and all other elements that make up a painting.

Maggie
Neale
Artist, Maggie Neale, of Color Musings, specializes in oil, dyes, and fabric textures in painting.

From her first memories, color intrigued her.  Whether with crayons, paints, or paper mache, she could get lost in the process and feel personal accomplishment with the results.
Upon graduation from high school in Norwalk, Ohio, Maggie was awarded the Art Award.  She then majored in art at Bowling Green State University, graduting in 1971 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts, some teacher preperation, and "the desire to bring mor art into the world."

Now, more than 30 years later, Maggie is
pleased to realize tht she has been able to live with art in her life, and that she has been able
to bring art into the lives of many others through teaching at the middle school level,
at summer camps, through community colleges, and in her own studios with apprentices and classes.

Maggie's work is based on color and texture.  Her forms are simplified, bold, and energized.  She "wants to picture the communication between forms, show the dance or movement and let that movement keep happening."  With eyesight that is weak, she leaves the details out, "hoping the energy of the action can speak and bring the viewer into the game of the painting."

Jasmine
Paij
Bigelow
Artist, Jasmine Paij Bigelow specializes in Playful Education with Environmental Roots and Artistic Fruit.

As a child, Jasmine remembers laughing while she rubbed a half-eaten nectarine all over her face.  At that moment, she felt what it was like to be both the painter and the canvas - and it
was then that she discovered the "symbiotic relationship between her internal and external being that has fueled her art ever since."

Jasmine grew up in the Green Mountains of Vermont.  As a teenager she spent a summer in England where she painted, and also won a fashion design contest from Oscar de la Renta for a watercolor painting.  Her first acrylic painting, "Radiant Joan of Arc," debuted at the Vermont Congressional Art Show.

Now, after having the desire to return to her roots, she has recently returned to Vermont, where she is reminded of her simple need to
play and create.  Jasmine has a passion for teaching others to be creative in their exploration of the world.  She believes that "art can be as simple as a child painting her face
with fruit."  She "paints what she obvserves through the collective insight of all her senses.  Her eyes, ears, nose, tongue and hands are a team.  Individually, their work is innocent and physical, but together, they strategically design her emotional relationship with the environment.  It is the sensation of that relationship that inspires her to paint."

Richard
Olson
Artist, Richard Olson specializes in acrylic and
oils on canvas.

Richard's journey as an artist began back in the eighth grade, when he sold several large pastels
to classmates for a few dollars.  He then began painting acrylics when his sister gave him a set
of paints for his birthday.  Eventually moving to Boulder, CO which gave him a new inspiration, passion and discipline for art; his work emerged depicting mostly romantic, dremlike landscapes and cityscapes.  Later Richard moved into a more abstract and expressionistic experimentation with acrylics as well as with black cryaons and oil pastels on paper.

By the end of the nineties he began to spend
more time with acrylics that culminated in a series of twenty-inch square paintings.  Since
then this series has become a kind of ongoing pictorial journal of playful and enigmatic images.

Richard is presently working on a body of work that has evolved from the twenty-inch square paintings.

"When he is out hiking in the mountains, he is overtaken by the beauty of a moment that cannot be photographed, recorded, or even touched.  Yet all the senses are intrinsically connected with this beauty.  It is the mystery of this experience that captivates him as an artist."

"For him, abstraction is more about transcending one's everyday perception of nature rather than transcending nature."
Anne H.
Legge
Artist, Anne Legge specializes in woodwork and stains.

Anne's artistic development in woodwork came after working with a variety of mediums.  Legge says she is grateful to have found the natural surfaces of wood.  "Wood has the natural warm tones and values that I consistently paint with," she says.  "I have a new appreciation of the material and its tendency to tell a story."

Legge has worked in various animation studios
in Los Angeles.  Her professional background in animation has allowed her to continue her connection to both color and composition.  Legge worked on color design with animations such as:
"The Simpsons," "The Sprouts," "Futurama"
and "The Wild Thornberrys."

Anne is now living in Prescott, Arizona where she has developed a body of work based on her new surroundings.  "I am now inspired by the desert," she said.  "The desert intrigues me.  I see layers of rock eroded away by time and weather that
can be captured in the grains of my wood."
Niko
Raterman
Artist, Niko Raterman specializes in abstract paintings and drawings.

Niko Raterman was the 2002 cecipient of the Frederick and Frances Sommer Foundation Fellowship.  Niko's work consist mostly of

I guess everyone can relate to that."

Meg
Perec
Artist, Meg Perec grew up on a small hobby farm with a myriad of animals.  Along with chores, Meg had to care for the horses.  The time and labor required in these chores often comes to her mind when she reflects on her choices of printmaking.  The process requires both physical and mental labor, and a lot of groundwork.  Many of the memories and stories she has have become
source material when she creates images.

Her prints are based on complex narratives which encompass the real and imagined, natural and cultural and historic and prehistoric realms.  A major theme in her work is in the progression of living things through time and space and the environmental imprints they leave behind.

Orchards and furrowed fields represent the vital link between human civilization and the natural cycle of the seasons; birth, harvest and death.  Agricultural images incorporate the death theme within the context of the cycle.  Death is impermanent as the next generation has already been sown.  Fossil imagery represents a decidedly permanent death, or extinction, not only of living things, but of thoughts, ideas and stories.  Meg almost always draws from memory, imagination and dreams.  The multiplicity and mutability of the print make it ideal for the creation of a menagerie of images that can be combined and ovelapped to build visual narratives and tell stories.  Meg tells her stories using this process
of creating and combining printed images.

Jane
Cassidy
Artist, Jane Cassidy began her "Honoring Life's Forms" after the death of her daughter.  Painting has been an opportunity for her to express her feelings as well as expressing how precious ilfe is and how each encounter is a blessing.  Each of her paintings is created with love and devotion as well as gratitude.

Jane paints cacti because she believes they can show us the miracle and determination of survival.  Adding blossoms to her paintings "is another example of how even in our darkest hours, life can be fruitful."

Jane has been surrounded by the arts from an early age.  She was born into a family of artists in 1955 in a small farming community in northern Indiana.  Her mother and sister are both artists, and even a great-great aunt was an excellent painter.  When she was young she assumed that all households were like hers, and that learning art was like learning to read.

Jane's formal art studies began in high school and continued in college at Indiana University.  Jane has learned the freedom of creativity through her children and family.

Jane has had experience with several mediums, but she finds that acrylic is very suitable to her technique and subject matter.  At the completion of each cactus painting, she feels a love for life and all the gifts that have come her way.  She feels very grateful for her gift and for the opportunity to create.
